Making a Profound Impact for the Arts in Atlanta

A visitor stands in a gallery looking up at a large black and red mobile while another visitor behind him looks at a statue on a pedestal.Since June 2021 through May of this year, the High will have hosted twenty-three special exhibitions. The Museum’s exhibition program is at the heart of our work to present a dynamic schedule of thought-provoking, educational, and inspiring art experiences. It is designed to present a full range of artistic achievements spanning cultures and time, which this year included cutting-edge contemporary works from living artists such as Dawoud Bey and Julie Mehretu; centuries-old treasures in Bestowing Beauty: Masterpieces from Persian Lands; and for the first time together, artworks by two of the seminal artists of the twentieth century in Calder-Picasso.

Exhibitions like Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement through Children’s Books, Underexposed: Women Photographers from the Collection, and Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America also provided a meaningful setting for important discussions about social justice issues and other topics to inspire mutual learning and growth.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, these exhibitions took on a new role as a way to escape from the day-to-day realities and experience something beautiful or new in a safe environment outside of our homes. Overall, more than 250,000 people visited these exhibitions at the High, and another 1.2 million people encountered them on our website. The exhibitions also provided complementary learning opportunities with educational resources, curriculum, and tours impacting more than 40,000 students and teachers.

The High is grateful to the following generous supporters who made an early investment in making these exhibitions possible through a two-year gift commitment.

In return for their philanthropic support, Exhibition Series Supporters enjoy prominent recognition in the exhibitions and in all print and digital publications and materials and receive invitations to exhibition opening events and special programs and tours throughout the year.
