At the intersection of art, architecture, and social practice, Bryony Roberts Studio creates work focused on how cultures, histories, and systems of power are represented or erased in a space. For the High’s ongoing Piazza project, Roberts’s collaborative approach resulted in a community project based on research she was undertaking on a concurrent placemaking installation and ideas surrounding mobility in public space.
Outside the Lines was conceived as an immersive maze of accessible, sensory environments. The project emerged from conversations between the studio and local self-advocates with disabilities and neurodiversity and their allies, with the goal of designing a space that is inviting and enjoyable for everyone. The design features an undulating steel structure that supports hanging colorful strands that rise and fall along the curving frame and gently divide spaces. The strands produce a hanging forest of tactile materials, designed in collaboration with individuals who are blind and visually impaired to enable dynamic navigation through touch and interaction.
