STUDIO SESSIONS: GESTURAL SCULPTURE
Tuesday, December 6, and Wednesday, December 7, 1–3:30 p.m.

Work with modeling clay to create sculptures that focus on the power of hand gestures to communicate information and emotion. This workshop will draw inspiration from Rodin’s expressive works and will incorporate hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building.

As They Appear To Be: Constructing Images Through Photography

Offered in connection with Deana Lawson, this online photography class will prompt participants to construct their own distinctive smartphone photographs that speak to notions of identity, representation, and human relationships. Led by Nydia Blas, the class will explore the opportunities and technical possibilities inherent in using smartphone cameras and the ways we can fashion images that convey information—true or untrue—about ourselves and others. Monir in the Mirror of Contemporary Art

This online class will examine the diverse artistic and cultural contributions of artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922–2019) within the historical context of Iranian and global art practice since the 1940s. Led by Kaveh Rafie and Leili Adibfar, PhD candidates at the University of Illinois, Chicago, class sessions will focus on the artist’s early life and work in Iran, her experience of living and working in New York, and her participation in culturally diplomatic exchanges between the two nations. The class will review Farmanfarmaian’s vast experimentations with various media and techniques, including reverse glass painting and mirror work, as well as the legacy of mirror work in contemporary Iranian art.
